Ian has been a member of the Society for nearly forty years and its Chair for the last ten. He was encouraged to join by Henrietta Munro who as Secretary was regularly active within the Society and owned the “Ships Wheel” antique shop in Thurso which is now the Bydand restaurant.
Although Ian was trained as a scientific glassblower, he focuses mostly on art glass commissions from his studio in Thurso. He learnt the specialised skill of working glass in a flame from his Uncle in South London and worked in Manchester and Hertfordshire before relocating to Dounreay in 1981.
Ian is the current Editor of the British Society of Scientific Glassblowers and a past Chair of that Society. His skills are always in demand and as well as teaching at Northlands Creative he has demonstrated and lectured across the UK as well as the USA, Holland, and Switzerland. More information about Ian and his work can be found here at Glass Creations
He is passionate about all aspects of art and encourages everyone to be as creative as possible. Ian sees the Society of Caithness Artists as an “umbrella” body to help those with a desire to express themselves using visual arts as a medium.
Away from glass and art Ian has been a Beaver Scout Leader for both 2nd Thurso and Reay Beaver Scouts
