William B Wallace – Vice Chairman
I graduated, BA (Hons) in fine art Drawing & Painting, from Gray’s School of Art in 1990, tutored under the current president of The Royal Scottish Academy Joyce W Cairns. I have been influenced by a diverse range of artists such as Willie Gillies, William Littlejohn, Sandy Fraser, The Scottish Colourists & Georges Braque.
After art collage I did my teacher training at Northern Collage, Aberdeen 1990-91. For the past thirty years I nave been teaching Art at Thurso High School, up to Principal Teacher level.
My work is more varied now than ever! I started my career doing still life painting in oils with themes involving subtle varying viewpoints, distorted perspectives and conflicting spacial relationships between objects. I’ve explored compositions based on art work that I like, focusing firstly on flat and slightly raised shapes and creating my own narratives from that premise. These works included figurative and landscape images as well as still life elements and often featured bold areas of colour or texture.
I like to work in a variety of media including using found objects, plaster, card, resins, inks, but my first love is painting in oils. Large figurative paintings have been my focus more recently, including the historical ‘Iolaire disaster’ commemorative painting ,‘Known Unto God’ (8ft x 4ft), currently on public display in Lews Castle, Stornoway.
My work is collected by private buyers across the United Kingdom, and can be viewed online, at my website
